Canelo Alvarez, 53-1-2, 36 KO’s, was successful in his move up to light heavyweight, taking the WBO title from Sergey Kovalev, 34-4-1, 29 KO’s, via 11th round knockout.
From the opening bell, Kovalev wasn’t interested in exchanging or pushing the fight. The game plan was to obviously jab and try to make it to the final bell and hope for the best. Kovalev is shot and, as most believed going in, Canelo put the final stamp on his career.
Canelo followed Kovalev around the ring and waited for him to tire out to attack. By the 10th round, Kovalev had nothing left and a solid left hook followed by a right hand would knock him out and a new champion would be crowned. There is now talk about Canelo moving up to cruiserweight and his team will be seeking out a suitable and beatable opponent.
