C.H.U.D. II – BUD THE CHUD (1989) – Zombie Horror/Comedy Review

In 1984, a unique monster movie was released. C.H.U.D. was a high quality, interesting film mixing government conspiracy with creatures in the city. This was a winner all around and a hard act to follow. In 1989, it was followed up with C.H.U.D II: BUD THE CHUD, which is easily one of the worst movies of all time, if not the worst movie of all time.

We begin at a government lab where they are keeping this supposed C.H.U.D. named “Bud” and they are putting him down. Bud (Gerrit Graham) gets loose but they freeze him and now he’s on ice, unable to hurt anyone, but this is a horror movie (I guess) and he is bound to cause some trouble again.

Steve (Brian Robbins) and Kevin (Bill Calvert) are high school friends. Steve is the really cool friend that wears all denim and Kevin is the geek, but they have found friendship. Of course, there has to be some problem that needs to be solved. That problem is that the duo accidentally loses the cadaver that their teacher needs. They now need a new dead body and break into the government lab and steal Bud the Chud. Oh dear lord, this is terrible.

This begins to resemble a bad WEEKEND AT BERNIES as the two struggle to bring Bud up to Steve’s room. They eventually drop him into a full bathtub and then accidentally drop a hair dryer into it and the electricity brings Bud back to life. We now see Bud walking around and constantly showing his bad teeth to the camera because that must have been a funny joke. He plays with the toilet, the mirror, and then leaves the house and says “meat” over and over again. He bites the dog and turns the dog into a “C.H.U.D.” OK, these are not real C.H.U.D. This is in no way a true follow up to the 1984 film. They just used the title to push this piece of shit.

Bud begins infecting the entire town and they all walk around saying “meat” or just being silly. They are almost saying: “look at me…I’m being funny!” At one point, Bud finds a head and then re-attaches it to a zombie that is walking around without one. He then shows a poster of a party to the group of these “C.H.U.D.” and they all run in that direction, screaming “meat.”

It should also be mentioned that Bud has a crush on Steve and Kevin’s friend, Katie (Trisha Leigh Fisher). It was trying to follow in the footsteps of the classic monster movies where the monster goes after the girl, I guess….but it wasn’t developed. This entire movie doesn’t make any sense.

The trio of Steve, Katie and Kevin have to become the heroes and stop this evil force and are successful but this is a horror movie (I think) and there is always a twist ending…well, this movie’s ending is so terribly predictable that it’s hard to call it a twist.

C.H.U.D II – BUD THE CHUD is a disgrace. It’s an insult to horror, an insult to comedy, and an insult to the 1984 classic. Fuck this film.

Rating: 0.5/10 – It only got the .5 because one of the zombies looked like my dad.
