PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

A grieving young boy discovers he has a superpower. An old fisherman realizes the cure for his ailing wife can be found in the sea. A muse struggles to exit the story her author is penning. And in Kabic, a coastal fishing village town forgotten by the rest of the world, the sea is gaining ground.

In Guetty Felin’s magical neorealist tale, Haiti’s first Official Submission for Best Foreign Language Film for the 90th Academy Awards®, these stories intertwine, collide and co-exist to create a poetic portrait of the island nation. Set five years after the devastating 2010 earthquake, AYITI MON AMOUR avoids the images of the disaster that filled screens the world over. Instead, the director, making her narrative feature debut, taps into her past documentary work to infuse verité-style moments along with lyrical elements to capture the realities of modern-day Haiti through a unique lens. Because while the pain of the destruction and memories of the great disaster still haunt the villagers, life must go on.

Shot on location with local actors and crew, Felin’s film, executive produced by award-winning Director-Producer Mira Nair (Queen of Katwe, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Namesake), is an important addition to the body of work coming out of Haiti’s burgeoning film scene. “In the emerging post-earthquake cinema of Haiti, no voice shines as brightly as Felin’s,” says Curtis Caesar John of Shadow and Act. And Courtney Small writes for TIFF that “Ayiti Mon Amour doesn’t just mark the emergence of a distinct new directorial voice; it’s a key development in the evolution of a national cinema.”
