In the 1990s, one of the most dominant forces in boxing was Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker, 40-4-1, 17 KO’s. Before Floyd Mayweather, JR., used his mastery of defense, Whitaker was one of the hardest targets to ever find in the game. The southpaw would play with fighters that others deeply feared and was the safest bet in sports at the time.
The long list of quality opponents that Whitaker beat includes Buddy McGirt, Roger Mayweather, Greg Haugen, Azumah Nelson, Julio Cesar Chavez, Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya. He was often featured on HBO, battling some of the best in the game and making it look easy.
In 1993, Whitaker would face the other fighter that was considered the best in the game, Mexican legend, Julio Cesar Chavez, who brought in a record of 87-0. From the opening bell, Whitaker used his defense and superior skill to control the fight and avoid damage. The fight would be a draw, but the winner was obvious. Sweet Pea won that fight.
It could be argued that he was robbed against Oscar De La Hoya in 1997, losing a unanimous decision in a fight that could have gone either way. Personal demons would send him into retirement after losing decisively to Felix Trinidad in 1999.
Pernell Whitaker was easily one of the best of all time and despite his lack of punching power, was a great deal of fun to watch perform in the ring. It was terrible news to hear of the passing of the great champion but he leaves behind a legacy and was the pound for pound best in the game when he laced up the gloves. RIP Sweet Pea.
