“Help other people,  that’s what life is all about.”Danny Trejo

Champion is a documentary about the brilliant actor, Danny Trejo’s, tumultuous life.  At age 10 years old he was arrested for assault and battery because he had accidentally hit someone in the head with a baseball bat.  He talks about how his Uncle Gilbert, who he named his son after,  brought him into the lifestyle.  His uncle was his hero and he followed in his footsteps.  He talks about getting into a gang as an early teenager and doing heroin at 13.

His uncle then showed him how to rob and how his family loved him enough to hide him when he was on the run.  He spoke of his entire criminal career.

He reflects about prison and how the paranoid mentality follows outside and how the system itself creates and feeds a monster than when released is difficult to get back into a normal society.  He discusses how even after 30 years the memories of prison life remain within him.

He talks about being 24 years old and going into the hole and being worried about the gas chamber.  He prayed to God and then went to AA.   He thanks both for his sobriety.

Interestingly, he goes back to San Quentin and even visits his old cell.  His reaction is to want to hug his wife and kids.  The impact is something one has to watch for themselves.

His road to helping others came at age 25.  He worked for different non-profit organizations.

His honesty and complete candidness makes this a spectacular watch.  Even when discussing his acting career, his path is captivating.

Other actors like Steve Buscemi, Dennis Hopper and Val Kilmer are all interviewed.  Filmmakers are interviewed and the consensus is all the same – everyone loves him.  He’s gracious and sweet.   He helps people and does the best that he can for everyone.

The Q&A bonus feature is also definitely worth the watch.  It’s fantastic!
