Interview by Geno McGahee
Vanilla Sugar is a very unique band with a great sound and catchy music. There are artists that push the envelope and bring something very different and with a style that is eye-catching. That is Vanilla Sugar and they have been earning quite a following.
Scared Stiff caught up with the band and were able to talk about their style and their music and what we should expect in the future.
GM: Can you introduce yourself to the public? How would you describe your band, your style, your message?
Vanilla Sugar is made of Alternative / Electronic music, a pop vocal sensibility, with a Metal influence. The music is a peek into my brain.
GM: What got you into music?
My dad is a musician and I always admired him while growing up (still do, Dad! Love you!). He always played in bands as well. I started sitting in during his piano lessons when I was 4 and my love for playing music grew from there.
GM: What musicians/bands were your inspirations?
I find a lot of inspiration in Sleigh Bells, Grimes, KoRn, The Prodigy, & Mindless Self Indulgence.
GM: Talk about your latest album. What should the public expect?
I am working on my debut album, called, “She”. I’m so excited. It’s been a long time in the making. It will be out Jan 2020. The music is a combination of high energy- dark and creepy synths topped with a floating, haunting vocal.
GM: What has been the best experience you’ve had being in the business?
My favorite moment was performing at Warped Tour in Anchorage, Alaska. It was so great being able to connect with fans. It was amazing seeing 1000 people soaking in the music.
GM: What has been the worst experience you’ve had?
The worst experience was a show somewhere south of LA. The venue wasn’t open on time, and when the bands got there to load in, the owner came out and said the show was canceled. Horrible experience considering that some bands drove 12+ hours to get to the show. I felt really bad for the fans too.
GM: With the changing mediums in the distribution of music, how difficult is it to make a living in the business?
It’s definitely an ongoing learning process. The biggest change I’ve noticed is people leaning towards hyping up single releases instead of albums- and those singles being streamed more than anything. Physical albums are rarely bought, everything is consumed via Spotify, Apple Music…etc. Making a living is mostly done on the road from performing.
GM: Any final thoughts?
