Having formed just shy of two years ago, horror rock band Truant recently released their debut album THE MAN WHO WAS DEATH to many awaiting fans. The band’s namesake and vocalist, Jay Truant, has a huge following on social media through his Facebook page Horror and Shit. It is rare to scroll through a horror group without seeing his page’s original content circulated. The passion for horror that Jay and his crew have is undeniable, so I was more than curious to see what his band was all about.
THE MAN WHO WAS DEATH has a variety of sounds including punk, metal, rock and gothic. There are eleven tracks on the album, although a couple of songs are instrumental only. Not to say that this is a negative thing since the music is fucking fantastic. Truant clearly has seasoned and talented musicians who play like they’re doing what they love. Tony Jenkins had so many highlights on guitar, bass and organ especially in Spookhouse Rock! and City of the Living Dead. I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to any act Tony is associated with because he is just that talented. Jay Truant’s vocals range from dark and gritty metal in Ghouls Rush In to punk rock in As You Bleed Out. Wolf Gnards (yes, you read that correctly) consistently rocks it, The Hills Have Us being a great example of his skill set. The lyrics are mostly about evil and death, but carry messages about the fucked up things people do. I felt like a story was told from beginning to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed the album in its entirety and look forward to seeing what Truant comes out with next.
