Native Americans are always a popular topic when talking about monsters or nature. They somehow have a sense of when a Sasquatch rapes a deer and can talk to the many spirits that are just roaming around the world everyday…of course they are invisible and we cannot sense them, but the Native Americans depicted in horror films and/or TV are always the same. They have “wolf” or “feather” in their name and they talk about Sasquatch or spirits. I’m 25% Cherokee, and I have yet to speak to a spirit or sense when a Sasquatch was near. The closest I’ve come was when my 400 pound Aunt Polly ran at the dinner table, and I sort of sensed it….then again, the pounding of her fatty feet against the floor probably tipped me off.
David Banner (Bill Bixby) going by the name David Barton this time, joins an expedition to uncover the facts behind a prehistoric Hulk. In the flashbacks, Hulk wearing a furry loincloth is throwing rocks at cavemen. Does this mean that Banner travels back in time or was there an exact duplicate Hulk in the past? How could they have zapped themselves with gamma radiation back then? They didn’t have a machine like Banner did! This episode didn’t start off making a lot of sense.
Banner meets up with Dr. Gabrielle White (Kim Cattrall) and she immediately recognizes him as “Dr. Banner.” He was the man that inspired her to go into science and his secret is safe with her. So, White, some old Professor, and Banner go into a cave and begin digging, which only pisses off the Native Americans in the area, primarily Rick (A Martinez). He and his two boyfriends are not happy with the digging and stealing of their ancestral items. They rig up the cave to collapse and it does with all three inside, forcing the emergence of Hulk.
With Hulk sighted, Jack McGee (Jack Colvin) comes down to investigate. He is obsessed with Hulk and wants desperately to prove he exists and he’s a real pain in the ass about it. Remember the intro to the show: “Mr. McGee, don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.” I think all of the hounding and chasing of Banner over the years should have made him angry enough to Hulk up and tear McGee’s arms off and then do him dry. I’m sure he would stop chasing the Hulk then, but he just keeps moving along. Hulk’s only real problem is McGee…everyone else basically leaves him alone. That one reporter…you get rid of him, and it’s easy pickings from there on out.
Since the “white eyes” have been allowed to go into the caves and take things, Rick and his group elect to take the museum hostage and it goes a little far. The professor is shot and Banner is roughed up. That’s not a good idea because now the trio has the Hulk to deal with. Hulk destroys everything and beats the hell out of Rick and his buddies and then takes off.
I like this episode…but it’s another unsatisfying one for Banner. He has another hot chick, willing to do whatever he wants, but no sex. He always gets a girl but never gets the girl. He flirts and they flirt back, but he never seals the deal. Why not? I know he is worried about Hulking up during intercourse, but I would roll the dice! He’s a superhero and in my opinion, superheroes should never jerk off. It’s beneath them.
KINDRED SPIRITS was fun…a little stereotypical with the Native Americans and some of them looked far from Native American, but it was still a great story and it overcame the beginning which was somewhat lame…with a prehistoric Hulk. I recommend it.
