Film Movement, the New York-based distributor of independent films, is pleased to announce that Ivan de Matteo’s critically-acclaimed THE DINNER, a taut morality play based on Herman Koch’s New York Times best-selling novel, will be available on DVD on November 24th. The film, which chronicles the downward spiral of a bourgeois family unhinging at its foundation after a grisly act of violence, won several awards at the Venice Film Festival and stars Alessandro Gassmann and Luigi Lo Cascio as the brothers.

As part of a special Black Friday promotion, Film Movement will include a DVD of THE DINNER for any new 12-month Film Club DVD subscription for either new subscribers or for existing subscribers who give a Film Movement membership as a gift. New subscribers and gift-givers will also receive 25% off this new subscription. Starting Monday, November 23, until Monday, November 30, go to filmmovement.com/holiday2015, enter code DINNER and take THE DINNER home for Thanksgiving!

Ivano De Matteo’s drama, THE DINNER, won the Best European Film Award at the Venice Days and screened at well-known International Film Festivals, including Busan, Miami and London. Paolo, a kind pediatrician, and his wife Clara meet his brother Massimo, a gutsy defense attorney, and his second wife Sofia for dinner once a month at a posh local restaurant. Though the men couldn’t be more different, on the surface they seem to have it all, and their dinners, begrudgingly attended by both couples, are peppered with inconsequential conversation and forced familiarity. When Clara sees disturbing security camera footage of a homeless woman being mercilessly beaten, she worries it may be her teenage son Michele and his cousin, Massimo’s daughter Benni, who are responsible for the gruesome attack. Their fragile balancing act now shattered, the two families navigate the repercussions of this senseless assault, revealing in the process the skewed priorities and moral shortcomings of their privileged, insulated perspectives.

Available to own from FilmMovement.com, Amazon and other retailers, the DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette as a bonus feature.

Praise for THE DINNER includes:

“Ivano De Matteo beautifully adapts Herman Koch’s best-seller with an all-star Italian cast.” – The Hollywood Reporter.

“Casting plays to the strengths of all actors with barely a missed beat….Gassmann is a standout in the tamped-down role of Massimo….The film’s skilled construction and visuals are coolly classical, allowing emotions to creep up rather than wearing them ostentatiously.” – Variety

“I’m a big fan of Koch’s book, so I was surprised and delighted to find a movie that actually improved it….De Matteo did a great job of adding humor and humanity to Koch’s dark story, and this one is not to be missed.” – I Love Italian Movies

“…A beautiful, soulful performance in which we saw a side of [Alessandro] Gassman we rarely see, and for this, I applaud the director, Ivano De Matteo.” – Italian Cinema and Art Today
