Solstice (2008) Horror Movie Review

I went to Big Lots today and was looking through the DVDs when I saw a movie I had never heard of.  It was made by the director of the Blair Witch Project and had notable celebrities in it, so I decided I’d give it a shot.

All in all, it isn’t bad.  The film is like a better version of I Know What You Did Last Summer combined with a bit of What Lies Beneath and IT.

Sophie (Elisabeth Harnois) commits suicide.  Her twin sister Megan, also portrayed by Harnois, begins getting strange signs.  She finds teddy bears, her hands become dirty and bloody without reason, and she feels her presence around her.  It’s clear that Sophie is trying to tell her twin about something that happened prior to her death.

Megan had always had a crush on Sophie’s boyfriend Christian (Shawn Ashmore).  They have sex after talking about Sophie, which personally I think is a dickish move.  You don’t move in on your dead sister’s boyfriend.  All of her friends are perfectly cool with this indiscretion.  They poke fun at the two when they find out.

The entire film surrounds this secret that all the signs are hinting at.  When it’s revealed it isn’t so much as a surprise as a confirmation of what you will expect.

The CGI is actually pretty good in this movie.  The acting is great.  The movie is definitely watchable.  It isn’t original by any stretch.  It’s been done 100 times before but it certainly isn’t horrible.

This is definitely something to watch out of boredom.  It’s one of those movies that sits on your shelf and you stare at it and think, “what the hell..nothing else is on.”

It definitely isn’t something that you have to watch but it is something watchable.

Scared Stiff Rating:  5/10
