Slaughter Hotel (1971) – Horror Movie Review

SLAUGHTER HOTEL follows a masked killer stalking the halls of a mental institution. He uses an ax, strangles and when handy, he’ll use a knife to cut the panties off his victims. Say what you will about the murders, he tries to end on a high note.

The asylum is home to many exquisitely beautiful patients and one rousing male Doctor, Francis Clay played by Klaus Kinski (rawr). I do enjoy the cut of his jib.

Speaking of jibs that I enjoy, Rosalba Neri is fabulous in this. She plays Anne who is held in the asylum merely for having a healthy sexual appetite. They say she’s a nymphomaniac. I say she’s a goddess with a fabulous bod who knows how to work it and get what she wants.  (Alexa, play Come And Get Your Love,by Redbone).

Stupid Professor Osterman (John Karslen) stops her from playing with the gardener and sends her to the showers. Not one to let a man dictate her orgasm schedule, she brings herself to climax while under the water. Later when having erotic dreams and fantasies, she explores herself again which proves one thing. The only thing hotter than Rosalba Neri in a love scene with a partner is when she’s in one with herself. Never doubt THE EURYTHMICS: Sisters are doin’ it for themselves.

Later Anne’s brother Peter shows up. It’s clear that as children they had a sexual relationship that Anne is desperate to continue as an adult. Peter is attractive enough, but even if the creepy blood relation factor wasn’t present, Anne could do so much better.  “Paging Dr. Clay – Paging Dr. Clay – We need want some hardcore action in Anna’s room, stat!” This may be the reason the husband doesn’t allow me near intercom systems.

Anne, though my favorite, is not the only patient there. Ruth (Gioia Desideri) is admitted by her husband. She’s abusive and suicidal so her presence there seemingly makes sense. She has a series of flashbacks told in the form of nightmares.

Next is Mara (Jane Garrett) who is coming along nicely in her treatment under the mindful tutelage of the lovely Nurse Helen (Monica Strebel). Helen has taken a keen interest in Mara’s well-being and was nice enough to oversee a wonderfully thorough nude massage she is given by another nurse. When unsatisfied with the care, she’s attentive enough to send the masseur away and work Mara’s body herself. She’s very dutiful and the scene is pure erotic gold. Mara just lies perfectly still as both actresses perfectly convey that Nurse Helen is getting far more from the experience than the patient.

Later, Nurse Helen gives Mara a naughty little sponge bath that they both enjoy though Mara still remains coy and stops it from going too far.  Helen follows Chrissy Amphlett’s lead and has some fun on her own until Mara comes out of the bathroom dancing and a little more ready for a good time. Finally these two ladies let go and play with one another in a tender and uninhibited lovemaking session.

As for the killer, he’s been busy. He decapitates another nurse and drags their body out to the woods as the lovely Anne ventures out into the greenhouse for an attempt to seduce the gardener again. She is nude before he even spots her. The gardener puts up a 30 second resistance as he’s worried about his job. He should have lost his shot right there. Seriously, he is as unworthy as they come.

Still, Anne doesn’t need to do too much persuading as she gets him to the floor and then shows him exactly what to do with his hands. The control and ownership Neri conveyed in the sexual control of her characters speaks to me on every primal level. I could watch her love scenes all day long.

When she wants round two, but the gardener is afraid of getting caught and slaps her like a little bitch. Anne, not missing a beat, slaps him with twice as much force and then owns the room while she struts out like a vamp ready to party. She then saunters right into two male residential staff members and tries to get a little 3-way going. You can’t blame a girl for trying! She is the reason the term to-die-for exists.

Speaking of to-die-for (and that’s a segue) The killer starts making his rounds as Dr. Clay and his patient Cheryl (Margaret Lee) discuss feelings that have developed between them. Clay is worried she only developed emotions for him due to the attention he gave her while in treatment. She insists that it’s not and thanks him for helping her escape a dead marriage. In her defense, Dr. Clay is a fascinatingly attractive home-wrecker.

What is it about Klaus Kinski that always got to me? Malcolm McDowell has that same thing about him. Its a certain aloof confidence. It is as though even when their characters don’t know what they’re doing, they’re still intent on leading. When their characters are hit with lust, it controls every aspect of their being. I love it. It’s very sexy. They’re fiery and in control without relying on brawn or masculinity. It’s a psychological manipulative control expressed best when both parties are in the know and game to play. Even as a protagonist there is something very dangerously wrong about him that makes it sexy. It plays well here as SLAUGHTER HOTEL does try to point the finger in his direction as the killer.

Overall, it doesn’t get better than this. The scene of Neri ravishing herself and then attempting to seduce the killer into bed with all the sincerity in the world is just the best type of viewing. For people to call that sleaze misuse the word. It’s sensuality. It’s autonomy. It’s empowerment. It’s the “Fuck the censors. I’m making this my way!” type of badass rebellion that makes me watch these movies on repeat. They’re sexy and strange and everything everyone in flower-print dresses holding religious pamphlets will warn you against. They are both the serpent telling you to bite and the apple that tastes so sweet. It’s instinct. It’s the beauty of having the monkey off your back and onto a screen where you can see all your fantasies in the most visual medium there is.

All I have to say is keep the pamphlets and hand over the apple because I’ll be rock’n out in hell before handing over my Rosalba Neri sexploitation.
