SYNOPSIS

Samira is a Zanzibari woman who aspires to have a family like all of her friends, but is also determined to pursue higher education and a career. Amidst social pressures and the ever-present need to respect traditions, she ultimately is forced to choose one life over the other. Following his subject over the course of seven years, filmmaker Nino Tropiano presents a poignant look at the inspiring trajectory of a modern, young African woman aa she strives to achieve her goals.

SAMIRA’S DREAM began in 2009, when Tropiano collaborated with Ireland’s Simon Cumbers Film Fund to conduct research on women’s education in Zanzibar and film a short documentary. After he met Samira from Nungwi, his perspective changed and he decided to capture the journey of a girl becoming a woman that could have the capacity to tackle pressing global issues such as education, Africa, women and youth. And, as Tropiano says, “though the story is painted on an exotic and colorful canvas, SAMIRA’S DREAM is an allegory that speaks to us all.”
