RISE OF THE SCARECROWS (2009) – Horror Movie Review

A backpacker walking along a country lane, a car stops but jets away before she can get a lift. Finally she gets a lift from the town sheriff, who offers to take the girl for a coffee… At first seems all innocent then she is ordered out of the car at gun point before he speeds away leaving the back packer wondering and lost, she screams…

Adams is a small town in Massachusetts, always welcomes visitors, though is reluctant about letting them go; as a very dark secret that the sheriff, Sheriff Howard (Cedric Howard) is determined to keep within the town at whatever cost, though the arrival of Officer Brown (Anthony Brown) soon begins to threaten the exposure of the sheriff’s dark secret…

Other characters that play a major part within this gripping movie include, Carlos (Stephan Joseph Adams) a hard talking no nonsense guy, who goes on a road trip with his buddies, Scott (Mathew Walker Wallace) and the heartbroken Bill (Jeremy Weiskotten). Their car breaks down near the town of Adams and have to unfortunately remain within the area, being advised to a campsite by the Sheriff Howard, a campsite that is deserted, though they are soon warned by a Mike Andrews (Terry Lockett) who tells them a story of horrific events that had taken place and what has happened since. The town of Adams cursed, his brother being a victim of the curse, sounding convincing, however Carlos not at all convinced…

And another interesting character within this movie is Pete (Mark Scarborough), an aging guy that seems to attract problems with the younger generation of Adams. Pete constantly calls the police with issues, obviously living alone and having time on his hands, a good example of this being while he talks to himself while making a coffee. Pete, also a little eccentric, enjoys painting weird and violent pictures, convinced there is a conspiracy going on and his paintings are evident of this…

Officer Brown is warned by Pete, told there is something deadly about the town…

Pete is the first to die, and soon the slaughter intensifies, the Sheriff in the meantime tries to cover it up.

There is good tensed feel about this movie and seems to move at a steady and enjoyable pace, in which is well executed by the director, Geno McGahee, who also plays the paranoid local mechanic, Dicky.

And as the movie progresses, Brown obviously becomes suspicious of goings on within the town and along with the help of Carlos and Bill they are determined to get to the bottom of it, at whatever cost…

This movie in my eyes is a fine piece of low budget horror, with great cast of actors, and as a nice little twist in the end…

Honeymoon (2014) – Cabin in the Woods HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

By Geno McGahee A cabin in the woods is a great setting for a horror film. The isolation sets the tone and the surrounding darkness and trees present an imposing force. The characters are alone and if something occurs, they have nowhere to run. We saw it in the EVIL […]
