I’ve been wicked sick for the last few days. I think it’s a combo of the heat, increasing my meds and insomnia finally working it’s black magic thus making me physicall ill.
Nonetheless, I knew Steve really wanted to go see Rifftrax. It isn’t often he looks forward to going to the movies especially as he suffers from the opposite of insomnia. He can’t help, but sleep. It takes something rather special for him to want to go to the theater. As he will without complaint take me to see movies like 22 Jump Street (2014), I knew I’d crawl out of bed and go with him to see it.
I love Rifftrax. I think Michael Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett are three of the best comedians of all time. I didn’t have any inclination to see Sharknado until I found out they were going to rif it.
The movie is exactly what you would expect. Bad acting, bad special effects, bad science, bad dialogue, bad characters – just bad…bad…bad. Still, it does have its charm. Most certainly, this was created by The Asylum crew who knew exactly what they were doing. There was nothing accidental about how the film took place. Still, it plays out almost like a parody of bad science fiction movies. It’s a lower quality Killer Klowns from Outerspace (1988). Nonetheless, it was fun and stupid. I hear some compare it to The Room (2003) or Birdemic (2010), but it isn’t the same. While those absolutely awful gems were created with the intentions of making a good movie, this was created to be bad. It is more like Club Dread (2004) or The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001). It is fully aware of what it is, yet that doesn’t make it unwatchable. It’s a cash-grab but the reason it’s a successful one is that it’s entertaining.
The Rifftrax jokes were hilarious and made the viewing all the more enjoyable. First the group riffed an old short about the importantce of springs. Essentially, a guy wishes there were no more springs in the world and this little cartoon named Coily showed him the world the way it would be without springs. It was pretty hilarious.
Despite not feeling well, I’m still glad I went out to see it. I suggest anyone who has the chance of seeing their live performances to do it. They are always a blast. Even if they’re riffing a movie that is unwatchable, their performance makes it awesome.
