We start with Mike (Billy Crystal) in grade school where he is a class outcast and no one believes he’ll ever be a Scarer. They go on a field trip to the location where all the monsters enter the doors to frighten the children. He follows one of the Scarers that has a Monsters University cap into the room of a child. He is so enthralled with the prospect of being a Scarer that when he gets older he attends Monsters University. He joins the Scare Program but the dean (Helen Mirren) doesn’t believe he has the ability to be scary.
Sulley (John Goodman) is the son of a famous Sullivan and is expected to do really well. He thinks his name is enough to get him by and doesn’t study. Mike resents Sulley and the two have a rivalry. Despite his name, when Sulley doesn’t perform well and accidentally destroys the scream meter that the dean had as an heirloom, he gets kicked out of the hottest fraternity and the Scare Program.
As Mike was part of the incident that destroyed the scream meter, he too was forced out.
Both Mike and Sulley try out a different class but remain uninterested. Mike asks the dean to make a bet. If his team wins the Scare Games, they are able to stay in the Scare Program. The dean agrees and they join the outcast fraternity.
Though predictable, it’s cute, fun and a great film for the little ones on Halloween, who can’t handle slightly scarier movies like The Worst Witch (which is awesome).
