The 1990s were not a good time for horror movies, overall. We had some decent ones here and there, but it didn’t stand out as a decade of greatness. So when I watch a film from that time that I haven’t seen, I don’t expect much. MILO is a film from 1998 and it’s not a great film, but it wasn’t that bad either. For a 90’s flick, it’s OK.
We begin with a group of kids that follow this strange boy wearing a raincoat to his house. Milo (Asher Metchik) isn’t right and ties down one of the girls and kills her with a scalpel and then attacks the others. It’s a traumatic situation and one that stuck with Claire Mullins (Jennifer Jostyn). She survived the attack and returned home to become a teacher, but that’s when it gets weird.
Claire starts seeing signs that Milo is stalking her, but after investigation, it turns out that he died. Also, if it is Milo, why is he still young and riding a bike? So, we have quite the mystery on our hands, and whoever is impersonating Milo is going around and killing the people that are close to Claire. I began to suspect that Claire may just be crazy, but I was very interested to see how this wraps up.
Milo’s dad, Dr. Matthew Jeeder (Vincent Schiavelli) comes into Claire’s life and agrees to help her figure this out, but it was pretty obvious that he was dirty, but she’s desperate to figure it out. The police suspect her to be the killer and with all of her Milo talk, her job at the school is in danger. So, she follows the doctor back to his home and that’s when this movie reveals the secret and it sort of sucks.
Maybe I just set my expectations too high. I was waiting for something shocking, but the great reveal and the ending (spoiler) turned out to be Milo. He’s still alive and didn’t grow and was obsessed with Claire. So, the crazy kid is still crazy and he’s still a kid. We then go into a chase through the house and battle. At times you think that Milo is dead, but then he comes back until finally he’s killed for good. It was a really piss poor finale to this film.
MILO is an unremarkable film. It’s interesting but the payoff just isn’t there. I recommend it, but it’s nothing great.
