On June 28th, 1997, the WBA Heavyweight Title would be up for grabs as defending champion, Evander “Real Deal” Holyfield, 44-10-2, 29 KO’s, would take on Mike Tyson, 50-6, 44 KO’s, in a highly anticipated rematch. In a dirty bout that featured Holyfield intentionally head-butting Tyson and Iron Mike retaliating by biting both of his ears, it was not the fight that the fans had hoped for. Tyson got disqualified in the third round and the fight would go down in history and leave a negative mark on the decorated career of the baddest man on the planet.
A lot of time has passed since these two legends stepped into the ring with each other, but when the 53-year-old Tyson released a video of himself hitting the mitts and vowed a return to boxing, Holyfield saw an opportunity to face an old rival in a bout that would be huge, believe it or not.
Holyfield is 57 years old, but he is a young 57 and has taken care of himself. Iron Mike is in tremendous shape and is punching like he did as a young man. If Tyson is going to return to boxing, why not take on Holyfield? Boxing is a 90% mental and Tyson was not in a good place in that second fight and wasn’t in a good place for a long time. He’s in a good place now both physically and mentally and would likely do much better against Evander.
Both men have been on the shelf for a long time. Both men are in their fifties, but their story may still have another chapter. If they announced that they were fighting again on pay per view, would definitely pay to see these legends lace up the gloves again and finish their story.
