World champion boxer Miguel Cotto today announced he has joined forces with the disaster recovery firm The Attenure Group to battle insurance companies which have routinely underpaid their policyholders in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
“The Puerto Rican people did what they were supposed to do to prepare for such a disaster,” Cotto said. “They planned ahead, bought insurance, and paid premiums for many years. Then, many of the insurance companies betrayed us.”
“I will not stand by and let these massive international companies bully my people,” Cotto said. “Today, as the potential deadline to demand damages approaches, the survivors of Hurricane Maria need to know this is a battle we can win together. But together, we must get in the ring and fight now.”
Hurricane Maria caused nearly $100 billion in losses to the Puerto Rican people. Instead of paying their policyholders what they deserve, many of the insurance companies are offering pennies on the dollar to repair the devastating damage. With the potential deadline for reporting damages looming, the stakes are high and the pressure is on policyholders. If the Puerto Rican people just sit back and take this abuse, the economy of the entire island can be impacted for more than a generation.
According to Alberto Cabrer of The Attenure Group, Cotto’s leadership is key to winning this battle.
“Many of the insurance companies want to keep policyholders divided so that they can use their financial advantage to stall and avoid paying,” Alberto Cabrer said. “It’s a classic David versus Goliath battle, and the insurance companies usually win, even on the mainland. When we discussed this with Miguel, we decided to work together to unite policyholders to force insurance companies to pay the people what they owe.”
“It has been nearly two years since Hurricane Maria, but still many homeowners, businesses and municipalities in Puerto Rico have not yet recovered the amounts owed by their insurers for property damage and business interruption. It is time for Puerto Rico to recover completely, it’s a battle that must be fought, and we want to help,” said Alberto Cabrer.
With Miguel Cotto, the underpaid policyholders and Attenure standing together, they are big enough to fight the giants. No other option on the island can provide the immediate relief and firepower to level the playing field with the insurance companies. With policyholders united with Attenure’s team of experts from Puerto Rico and the mainland, together they can create an unparalleled team to help policyholders collect what they are owed.
“The insurance companies know they owe the insurance proceeds to the people of Puerto Rico, but they are bullying policyholders with their resource advantage and knowledge of the system,” Cotto said. “Bullies don’t just give up, they will not pay unless we make them pay. Today, I am proud to tell my people that, together with Attenure, I will fight for them in this battle. We need to fight together, now.”
