Living Beyond the Five Senses by Teresa L. DeCicco, PhD – BOOK REVIEW

We live in an overwhelming world full of outside stimulation such as noisy cities, televisions blasting mindless programing, to people endlessly chatting on cell phones. Everywhere we go it seems that there is something assaulting our senses. Our eyes are barraged with signage, our noses are subjected to fumes of all sorts. We are always rushed and barely even register the taste of our food when we eat. It is what most of us do and experience every day.

In her book “Living Beyond the Five Senses; The Emergence of a Spiritual Being” Dr. Teresa L. DeCicco teaches us how to begin to develop a spiritual transformation. One in which the material things in life aren’t what we cherish most, but rather the people and experiences. It is not a book on religion but rather a book about how you can become a better person and a more in tune and relaxed person. By being a nicer person we tend to attract nicer people.

As I read through the book several of the chapters really hit home for me. She talks about crisis and how some handle it and suggest better ways to handle it. Everyone will face hardship and crisis. It is a fact of life. Many people handle it on their own while others spew their problems out for all to see, perhaps looking for sympathy, never realizing that even the people who offer sympathy are indeed going through their own private problems. Dr. DeCicco teaches the reader about acceptance of our problems, whether they be physical or mental. By accepting them we become more at peace with them and can face them with courage instead of rage and emotion.

The book is broken into two parts. The first part discusses things in our life that transform us as humans such as crisis, food that we eat, our mental state and many others. The second part of the book guides us as to how to make our own spiritual transformation into a better and stronger person. It’s not religion as I said earlier. It is quite simply becoming more at peace with who you are and making strides towards your goal of a more peaceful life.

You do not have to let the world around you control who you are, you can indeed take active steps to control your environment and make it a better place to live physically and mentally. “Living Beyond the Five Senses” is a nice guide book to help those of us who aren’t necessarily spiritual learn a bit about becoming more spiritual. I walked away from reading this book with more knowledge on handling the things and people around me in a new light and feeling better for it. Definitely a good book to check out.

Rating: 7/10 – “Tap into your spiritual self”
