Moving down to the super middleweight division, Lionell Thompson, 22-5, 12 KO’s, pulled the upset over the powerhouse, Jose Uzcategui, 29-4, 24 KO’s, winning a unanimous decision by scores of 95-94 and 96-92 (twice).
In the opening round, Thompson scored a knockdown from a straight right hand. He got up and began pushing forward, but could not find Thompson. At one point, the referee took a point away from Thompson for holding, which wasn’t really needed. It wasn’t excessive.
As the rounds went by, Thompson’s skills were the story and the majority of the rounds were going his way and he avoided most of the incoming shots. There was urgency in the Uzcategui corner as the fight seemed more and more hopeless. He even came out southpaw in the final round but it didn’t change anything. It was a good win for the 168 pound Thompson.
