After a two year layoff, WBA welterweight champion, Keith Thurman, 29-0, 22 KO’s, survived a rocky seventh round to work his way to a majority decision victory over the game challenger, Josesito Lopez, 36-8, 19 KO’s, by scores of 113-113, 115-111, 117-109.
Thurman controlled early, landing a left hook in round two that sent Lopez to the floor. The superior skillset of Thurman dictated the fight, but Lopez would find some moments in round seven, as he landed some notable shots. Thurman regained control and cruised his way to what seemed like an easy decision, but his is boxing and one judge had it remarkably even. Make no mistake, Thurman clearly won this fight and by a wide decision.
The ring rust was evident and Thurman will be better in his next, but he looked rather good for having a two year layoff. This was the right trial horse to return against, getting rounds and having to work off the ring rust. Thurman probably needs another fight before he takes on a serious challenge in the talent-packed division.
