Last night, Bryan Danielson approached Jon Moxley in the center of the ring to propose a partnership to take over AEW. The idea of the two teaming up to take all of the titles seemed to appeal to Moxley and this is the potential start of a great idea and a familiar one. AEW’s version of the NWO could be in its infancy.
In 1996, WCW created a storyline that made it appear that the WWE was invading the company. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, the WWE’s Razor Ramon and Diesel were now implying that they were there to destroy the company. They brought in their third guy, another former WWE, the biggest WWE guy in history, Hulk Hogan. It changed wrestling. Now, history could be repeating itself.
If Moxley opts to team up with Danielson, and he will, the two will run over most of the AEW roster and win whatever titles they want, but they won’t do it all alone. Initially, I can see the two teaming up and winning the world title, TNT title and possibly tag team titles, but they will soon expand and there’s one other guy that makes sense to create a trio of former WWE guys that could see that AEW is going in the wrong direction and want to destroy it from within. That guy is CM Punk.
CM Punk needs something badly. The honeymoon is over in AEW and he needs some direction. Having him come in as a surprise partner to the two and turning into a heel would be great and showcase his great promo skills, which are far better as a bad guy.
If this happens, there’s some really cool stuff that can happen and it can all start with Sting. Sting took down the NOW, before everything in WCW got muddled and they created the wolf pack and so on, but if we stop at the moment where he beat Hogan for the title and pretend the story ends there, this new trio could spark memories and the need for Sting to make sure that history doesn’t repeat itself. He might have to take Darby would obviously be a great hero to take them down and there’s a few others that could team up with him to go after these three.
I have no idea where this AEW story is going but I’m hoping that we see it turn into the new NWO and they run rampant on the company and give birth to a team of faces to try to take them down. It would be a lot of fun.
