Honeymoon Horror (1982) – SLASHER HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

I love the 1980s and its brand of horror. It really was a good run for the horror genre and especially the slasher sub-genre. So, whenever I stumble across a slasher from this time that I have not seen, I celebrate. It’s sort of like when I was much younger and going into my local video store and discovering a new gem. How I miss the days of the video store!

HONEYMOON HORROR is a film that involves a retreat for newlywed couples. All of these new couples go to a secluded island resort to enjoy their first moments as a married couple, but the island has an issue. There is a killer on the island and even though they never show the killer’s face, it’s not a whodunit. I thought that it must have been one but it wasn’t and with the characters so undefined, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

The owner of the resort was cheating on her husband and he came home a little early and found her in bed with another man. After a struggle, he was killed and then burned to a crisp. It was ruled an accident but the burned up old husband (spoiler…not really) is back and killing anyone and everyone he can.

The entire cast of characters blurs together in this mess. There really isn’t anything to this movie outside of some small talk and then death. One of my biggest gripes is the “comic relief” with the sheriff and his deputy. They are always bumbling and they play these musical cues that will tell the viewer that what they are watching is funny. It’s a basic laugh track and anything that this movie had going for it lost it when these two characters were on the screen.

To add insult to injury, the film had a comedic ending…well, an attempted comedic ending, rather than the one that made sense. The true ending was when the husband came back and got revenge and was then killed, but the producers were apparently sold that the sheriff was funny and had him shooting his gun up in the air and scaring away other married couples while they played that goofy music. How did I make it to the end of this one?!

HONEYMOON HORROR is terrible. It had that cool 80’s look to it, but other than that it was horrid. Avoid this one people.
