Floyd Mayweather, JR., 50-0, 27 KO’s, is returning to the ring…sort of. After his knockout victory over UFC superstar, Conor McGregor, the retirement was set, but Floyd is a businessman first and sees the opportunity to make some more money. When he announced that he is planning to fight Manny Pacquiao again, after a lackluster first fight, the boxing fans were talking, even if the talk was negative. Floyd knows how to draw a crowd and considering the path of Pacquiao at this current time and the return of Floyd in this tune up fight on December 31st, against kickboxer, Tenshin Nasukawa, 27-0, 20 KO’s, in a boxing match, presumably. Nasukawa is much younger, but the tremendous skill of Floyd should be more than enough to take the victory. As good as McGregor was in the UFC, he could not compete against Mayweather.
Why a kickboxer? It’s money. There has to be a great deal of cash on the table from the promoter, RIZIN Fighting Federation, for Floyd to take this fight as his tune up for Pacquiao. The gamble is Floyd’s undefeated record and Father Time has not lost a fight yet. Nasukawa may not have the skillset to beat an old Floyd, but he seems to have some power and PBF looked more hittable than ever before when he fought McGregor. If the stars are aligned and Floyd is the same or worse than he was when he fought McGregor, anything can happen.
If all goes well and he wins, and if all goes well for Manny Pacquiao and he wins, then a rematch will probably happen and it will have that 100 dollar price tag on the pay per view again. The question is: can they sell it again? Chances are they will make a lot of money, but there is no way that they are going to do better than McGregor-Mayweather. The drama just isn’t there for a rematch. There is little doubt as to who would win a return bout. Renting it would be, for a boxing fan, a chance to see two great fighters have one last good fight against each other before they really call it a day and the good news is that the rematch would have to be better than the first fight. It has very small shoes to fill.
