Earth Girls Are Easy (1988) – Netflix Instant Watch – A sci-fi comedy cult classic that still delivers

I grew up loving this movie. Both my husband and I enjoy it but I know so many people who outright hate this film. For those who haven’t seen it, the story follows Valerie (Geena Davis) who is engaged to Ted (Charles Rocket). Ted cheats left and right. One night after she gets a makeover from her hair stylist best friend Candy (Julie Brown), to entice her fiance, she catches him with another girl.

As she debates whether to take him back or not a spaceship carrying three aliens crashes into her pool. Afraid for their safety she brings the hairy trio, Wiploc (Jim Carrey), Zeebo (Damon Wayans), and the head of the bunch Mac (Jeff Goldblum) to Candy for a makeover.

Mac is instantly attracted to Valerie and they form a bond, but she believes it will never work. The rest of the story centers on their connection and keeping the aliens safe.

As Davis and Goldblum were together at the time they have excellent chemistry. When I was a child, I was devastated to learn that they broke up. I was always really invested in certain couples. My mother hid the fact that Sonny and Cher broke up for years until I was about 11 and saw a book in the library that spoke of their divorce.

Goldblum is another actor who I just adore. I think he made Jurassic Park along with so many other great productions. His overly-intelligent characters are always interesting, but in this movie it’s refreshing to see him out of that role and into an alien who slowly learns English and the ways of human beings.
Davis also does a great job. I love her and think she is just wonderful in any and all roles.

Now, that said – I miss Julie Brown. She’s great in this…was great on her MTV show and Girl Fight Tonight remains one of the greatest songs ever! (Ok…maybe not ever but damned if it isn’t awesome!!) The video is below if you’d like a blast from the past.

RIP CHARLES ROCKET
