Diego De La Hoya, 21-0, 10 KO’s, would not have the return victory he wanted after over 300 days of inactivity as a vicious unintentional head butt would make his opponent, Enrique Bernache, 24-12, 12 KO’s, unable to continue. The fight was even in the first round and heating up in round two, but two back to back head butts by De La Hoya would open a huge gash in the middle of the forehead of Bernache.
De La Hoya was upset at the end of the fight and result, but it was the only call to make. It looked like it was going to be a good action fight and considering the layoff and questionable conditioning of De La Hoya, the later rounds may have been interesting. Unfortunately, it didn’t get there.
