The undisputed lightweight title was gifted to female mega star, Katie Taylor, 14-0, 6 KO’s, with a ridiculous majority decision win over the rightful winner, Delfine Persoon, 43-2, 18 KO’s, by scores of 95-95 and 96-94 (twice).
In the opening round, Taylor out-boxed Persoon, but that changed in the second as Persoon began the attack, throwing straight hard punches and picking up the pace as it went on. By the seventh round, Taylor was spent, and Persoon finished incredibly strong. For a championship fight, this should have been 12 rounds. This is the problem and why this fight was allowed to end in such controversy. Taylor was so spent, it’s hard to imagine her finishing the fight if there were two more rounds.
This is why boxing has a bad reputation. Taylor is so hyped and such a money-maker, it was better business for her to win and sadly, it could have impacted the final scores. A rematch is in order and possibly an investigation.
