There was a time when David Price, 25-6, 20 KO’s, was seen as the future of the division, but after back to back losses to Tony Thompson and some other defeats, all via knockout, he fell off the map of serious heavyweight contention. On Saturday, he was supposed to be a stepping stone for David Allen, 17-5-2, 14 KO’s. If Allen defeated Price, he would get a shot at Alexander Povetkin, but that wasn’t to be.
From the first round on, Price used his range and hard right hands to beat and batter the smaller man. The stamina of Price is always an issue, but he was allowed to keep the pace he wanted and systematically take Allen apart. Price showed some of the magic that made him the fighter that so many had high hopes for, and has now put together three straight wins and will now focus on another fight, probably against a notable British heavyweight.
After the 10th round, Allen refused to come out of the corner, giving the TKO win to Price. Before the fight, Allen spoke about how easy the fight was going to be and that his fight with Povetkin was a done deal, but when he quit, that all went away.
A good fight for Price would be Joe Joyce, 10-0, 9 KO’s. Joyce has beaten some good fighters like Bryant Jennings and Bermain Stiverne, but he has some defensive flaws and despite his KO record, throws a lot of arm punches. Price could cash in with a big right hand. For Joyce, it would be a big payday and he would be heavily favored to win.
