Complicity (2013) – HORROR MOVIE REVIEW

Perhaps you’ve been to a party where things got a bit out of hand. You know the type of party I’m talking about. Maybe a lamp got broken, the carpet got a drink spilled on it or someone for some strange reason decided to go up into the crawlspace and their feet came crashing through the ceiling unexpectedly when they step off the rafters. That last one really happened at a party I went to in high school. Kind of weird seeing two feet poking out of a ceiling. Someone is going to be mighty angry but these are all things that can all be fixed.

“Complicity” is a movie that starts out like this, just an innocent party while Mom and Dad are out of town. Shannon (Shoshana Bush) has a group of kids over to have a bash. Sure, things get a bit out of control at first. Nothing too bad early on. Then it escalates. As everyone starts drinking awful things start happening. Before you know it one of the young men at the party is accused of rape by Kim (Heather Hemmens) one of the drunk partygoers. Is she telling the truth? It is hard to tell because Kim is one of those mean girls that could have other motives.

The party is abruptly put to and end as a small group of kids stay behind and try to figure out who is telling the truth. The boy denies he raped her but Kim insists he did. Some believe her but want to hear the boys side of the story. Too late. The pack of youth become judge, jury and executioner as they beat the boy to death in the kitchen and now everyone is pointing fingers at each other. The plot only thickens as they decide what to do next.

“Complicity” is an entertaining thriller full of partying and bad decisions. It wouldn’t be a thriller if these kids made the right decisions. The story is a bit far fetched at times but still kept me interested with a cast of characters that are relatable and intriguing. It is a very dark thriller that deals with keeping secrets, making bad decisions and becoming part of a unspeakable situation, whether intentional or not, and trying to live a normal life after the fact.

An entertaining movie for sure. It’s one of those film where you will be yelling “Call the police!”, but of course if they did that the movie would end before these kids get in too deep. The cast of “Complicity” comprises of some veteran actors including Shoshana Bush, Heather Hemmens, Sean Young, Jenna Boyd and Haley Ramm. It is directed by C.B. Harding.
