Combate Americas Announces Postponement of Puerto Rico Debut – MMA News

Geno

Combate Americas today announced that it has postponed its debut in Puerto Rico, originally slated for Saturday, Jan. 25.

“We feel that the timing of our January date will no longer allow us to accomplish our original, big picture goal of uplifting the island given everything that is going on and, that in order to achieve what we set out to, we must re-schedule the show,” said Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren.

“Puerto Rico has suffered greatly these past few weeks due to the earthquakes that have hit the island,” said Dr. Luis Martinez of LM Entertainment, the promoter of the event.  “Given these extraordinary circumstances, we feel that postponing the event was the best option.  Our efforts are now focused on helping get things back to normal.  We are certain that the fans understand and agree with this.  We will announce a new date soon.”

All of the athletes scheduled to compete on the original date have been notified.

The card was to feature a previously announced, 130-pound catchweight bout between seven-division world boxing champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (1-0-1 MMA; 37-1-1 (27 KO’s), boxing) of Brooklyn, N.Y. via Carolina, P.R. and former International Boxing Federation (IBF) world champion Dahianna “La Cobra” Santana (0-0 MMA; 36-12 (15 KO’s), boxing) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Combate Americas will begin its 2020 live event series on Friday, Feb. 21 with a world championship showdown in Mexicali, B.C., Mexico, between undefeated, reigning world lightweight (155 pounds) kingpin Rafa “Gifted” Garcia (11-0) of Mexicali and 2019 “COPA COMBATE” tournament champion Humberto Bandenay (18-7, 1 NC) of Lima, Peru.

The world lightweight championship event airs live on television in the U.S. in Spanish on both Univision (12 a.m. ET/PT) and TUDN USA (12 a.m. ET/9 p.m. PT), and in English on AXS TV (10 p.m. ET/7  p.m. PT), and in Mexico on Televisa Canal 5 (11 p.m. local time).
