Chris Algieri, 24-3, 9 KO’s, scored a knockout with a consistent body attack over Tommy Coyle, 25-5, 12 KO’s, in a super lightweight title eliminator. Algieri came out aggressive and won the first round, but paid for it in the second when a right hand by Coyle stunned him and it would lead to a barrage of punches that put Algieri in check. The advantage wouldn’t last long.
In the fourth round, a left hook to the body would hurt Coyle. A second left hook to the body would put Coyle down. Hurt badly, he got up and fought hard to keep Algieri off, but the secret was out and the focus shifted primarily to the body. In the seventh round, Coyle would be hurt badly again by a body shot and the eighth round would be a one-sided beating that prompted the corner of Coyle to call it.
Algieri is now headed to a title shot and Coyle may be hanging up the gloves.
