LGBTQ+ alt pop artist Cayley Spivey has released her new single “Cross the Line” today. Prior to today’s release, Spivey also released two singles last year, “SFU” and “Not Over You Yet”, to launch her debut as a solo artist. Fans can listen to “Cross the Line” here and watch the live music video premiere via Cayley’s YouTube channel at 12 pm EST today here.
Regarding the song, Cayley shares, “‘Cross the Line’ is a song for when you really can’t know the future of a relationship. It sets the scene for being in a broody state of mind while trying to make sense of a complicated situation. Sometimes things don’t work out and that’s okay, but it’s up to us to still make peace with it on our own.” “Cross the Line” was produced by Eli Strobeck and mixed and mastered by Fil Thorpe-Evans (Prblm Chld, World’s First Cinema).
The music video for the song also marks an important and big step for Cayley personally as it is her first to portray her with a female love interest. As an LGBTQ+ artist from a largely conservative state, she deeply values the importance of talking about her sexuality both within her art and her social platform. “‘Cross The Line’s’ music video is the first time I got to honestly and authentically express my sexuality”, says Spivey. “In previous music videos with my band Small Talks I was afraid of what people would say, but after lots of internal work I came to the conclusion that I want to be known for who I actually am, not for what I think would cause the least amount of controversy. In LGBTQ+ relationships it’s been said the emotional weight can be a lot more intense than in heterosexual cis relationships because of the controversy that unfortunately still surrounds lgbtq+ lives. The music is supposed to be a rollercoaster of emotions reflecting the intensity of a relationship that has its own struggles and the struggles of society’s or close friends/family’s judgement.”
