Burial Ground (1981)

I am not a big fan of zombie movies for the most part. I don’t like mindless gorefests. The zombie films I enjoy focus on the people that attempt to survive, not the zombies. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was a perfect zombie movie and so was CHILDREN SHOULDN’T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS because they focused on the people. BURIAL GROUND is a zombie movie, jam packed with zombies, that is incredibly unique and amusing. I didn’t get what I expected when I pressed play.

We begin with a bearded professor opening a crypt and disrupting the dead. They come over and attack him and kill him, but revenge against the man that disturbed their final resting place isn’t enough. They are now loose and are looking to kill everyone they can find. I was very impressed with the shots of the zombies as they walk around. I could watch them walk around for hours…just walking. They were really neat looking.

As in every zombie movie, you have humans trying to survive and we have a unique group to say the least. Most unique is Michael (Peter Bark), a kid, I guess…well, I can’t tell how old he is. He is so weird looking. He could be 13 or 50….beats me, but he is one of the most disturbing characters of all time. (Spoiler) He wants to have sex with his own mother and grabs her tits and then tries to play with her hoo-hoo. The fact that his mother nearly allows it is so disturbing and later on, when she allows him to breast feed, it’s incredibly disturbing. Those odd Italian horror films…you never know what you’re going to get.

There was a lot of sex, a lot of sex outdoors, a lot of sex with grimy guys with bad porno mustaches, and not a hell of a lot of dialogue. This movie will not go down in history as a greatly written film, but there is something that it has going for it more than most: fun factor. At one point, the zombies are walking around, and then they have weapons. It’s like the zombies had a meeting and decided to get weapons and return to the house with them. Another thing that I found amusing is that they are of varying intelligence. Some just stand there and get shot in the head while others scale the walls and try to get into the house. These zombies are just like people. Some stupid, some smart…

This movie is just so entertaining. It is shot well, the zombies are very interesting, and I was thoroughly amused from the start to the finish. BURIAL GROUND has a cult status and I’ve heard about it for years, but my dislike for most zombie films kept me away from it. It was a pleasant surprise and I understand totally why people love this movie. I love it and I highly recommend it.

Scared Stiff Rating: 8/10. Incredibly fun movie.
