On March 10th, the Oscar-nominated true story about Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson and Kayla Pospisil and their battle for justice against the sexual predators at FOX News. Featuring incredible performances by an all-star cast, BOMBSHELL is an amazing film that is very impactful and timely considering the recent goings on with Harvey Weinstein.
The first thing that has to be noted is the amazing performance by Charlize Theron as the newscaster, Megyn Kelly. Theron is a chameleon and I didn’t even realize it was her until the very end of the film. She completely turned into Megyn Kelly.
FOX News was much like Hollywood, casting couches and all, and the young and aspiring female newscasters had to put up with a lot of harassment to move up in the company. Kelly, being with the company for a long time and keeping the dirty secrets under her hat, has made it to the top and went head to head with President Donald Trump in a true spectacle. As that happens, new hire, Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie), starts and desperately wants to make it to the top and that’s when she is introduced to Roger Ailes (John Lithgow), and she learns about what it takes to make it at FOX.
For years, Ailes used his position to prey on the young women that hoped to work for the network. Veteran newscaster, Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman), is all too aware of these happenings because it happened to her. When she is fired, she decides to pursue a lawsuit against the network and Ailes with hopes that others will follow suit and make things right in the world.
The fire builds in Kelly, the most famous of the newscasters, and she begins to build the confidence to go after FOX and the predators that were working behind the scenes. Ailes continues to deny everything and goes on the offense and things keep getting more and more intense, leading to a satisfying conclusion, proving that sometimes the good guys win, although, the settlements that were paid out to Ailes and O’Reilly were rather offensive.
BOMBSHELL is an amazing film. It was cast incredibly well, but Theron stole the show, proving that she can do anything and do it well. I can’t recommend this enough.
