Bloody, Bloody Apple by Howard Odentz – HORROR BOOK REVIEW

A very creepy tale with even creepier characters. Set in the imaginary town of Apple, Massachusetts, “Bloody Bloody Apple” focuses on Jackson Gill and two of his friends. While walking home from school one day they discover a murder victim in the woods. It is pretty traumatic for the trio because they know the murdered girl from school and she was killed on the very path they walk home on every day.

The town of Apple is no stranger to murder because every Autumn for the past 60 years there is a series of unexplained and unsolved killings. Because of this people have either left the town or just accept the fact that it happens every fall and hope they aren’t the next victim. Now that this year’s cycle of murders has started Jackson gets a cryptic message from his crazy sister who has a split personality. She tells Jackson that five will die. She is so insane that she is chained in the basement in a custom- made pink bedroom. Although she is chained up she seems to know too much about the killings. How does she know so much? She can’t unshackle herself, yet she knows who has died and how.

Author of “Bloody, Bloody Apple” Howard Odentz has outdone himself in this, his second novel. His first book is “Dead (A Lot)”. This new book is way creepier than the first and has much less humor. It is REALLY CREEPY! The characters are well done with lots of layers to their personalities. You either love them or hate them, but as you delve deeper into the pages you start questioning who you should love and who you should hate.

I really like the Jackson Gill character. He puts family above all even though he has one of the most bizarre families anyone could ever have. He has to deal with his split personality sister who goes from loving to incredibly evil, his out of touch grandfather, his mother who also is pretty much out of touch and depressed and of course his Dad who doesn’t really care too much about anything except his religion. His friends, whom he treasures dearly, also have pretty screwed up families.

Howard Odentz takes this mis-mosh of dysfunctional characters and puts together a wonderful story that is equal parts horror and love. The multiple storylines are intriguing to follow and I found myself really becoming attached to the characters. Even characters I know I shouldn’t like were written so that you would feel a certain degree of compassion for them. That is one of the reasons this book really struck a chord with me.

So if you enjoy a good creepy story, a romantic subplot and a touching tale of friendship it is all here in the pages of Odentz’s “Bloody, Bloody Apple. I suggest getting a copy today. You will be glad you did.

By Geno McGahee I love Xmas. It’s just a great festive time where people seem to be nicer with the exception of the black Friday shoppers and those that try to stab you as you try to take your new Xbox One to your car. They do not have that […]
