Blood Legend (2006) – Demonic Horror Movie Review

I found this movie in one of those Brain Damage 50 packs. I see a lot of bad reviews for these 50 packs, but how can you go wrong? You get 50 movies for around 20 bucks…that’s a deal. So what if they don’t have the highest production value? It is still rather fun watching what filmmakers do with very little budget and lots of heart.

BLOOD LEGEND was one of the movies in this particular pack that I was able to sit through and actually enjoyed. We begin with a couple of college kids making their way over to an area where a local legend supposedly resides. They want to impress their professor by doing a good paper. Things get really good when a really hot chick appears and begins straddling one of the guys, but the fun doesn’t last long as she drives a knife into the chest of the man and proceeds to rip out his heart. This act brings forth a beast or demon of some sort. The demon looks rather good…from afar at least. It’s like this chick I saw at a Halloween party…good from far, far from good. I hate when that happens to me. At least it didn’t turn out to be a dude.

The murderess witch reports to her uncle, the evil man that has plans to bring back this demon to its full power. Moira (Syn Devil) was executed for being a witch, but she would return as the demon and as herself too…exposing her breasts whenever she could. Syn Devil was in other films like VAMPIRE SISTERS, EROTIC SURVIVOR 2, MY VAMPIRE LOVER, and HORROR HOTTIES…all soft core porn/horror hybrids. I’m not a fan of the porno/horror. I’m a fan of porn. I’m a fan of horror, but they should be separate. Thankfully, BLOOD LEGEND didn’t focus on the porn, as many of films of this level do…they used it to most likely increase chances of distribution, but they had a story to tell.

A coven of witches, led by an evil man, are killing people to bring back this demon to full force. Overall, there is no character development across the board. The characters are interchangeable and forgettable, but the story was decent and that is what carried the movie. I also liked the look of the demon, although when they got close shots of it, it was obviously a latex Halloween costume. I don’t know why they did so many close ups. When they got shots from a certain distance, it looked good, but when they got the tight shots, you could see how fake it was.

BLOOD LEGEND could have been a rather decent movie had they spent more time developing the characters and recast the role of the evil uncle. He ruined the flow of the movie and much of the time is focused on him. It really hurt the end product.

Overall, I did enjoy BLOOD LEGEND. There was a lot of heart involved and you could tell that the producers wanted to make a decent movie. In the end, I recommend it. It kept my interest despite all of its problems.

Scared Stiff Rating: 4.5/10…not bad, all things considered.
