Big Hero 6 (2014) – DISNEY MOVIE REVIEW

When I first saw the trailer for BIG HERO 6, I wasn’t overly excited for it. I thought it looked pretty crappy, but I finally got the chance to see it and the movie is outstanding. It is a superhero film with plenty of humor and touching moments throughout. The film should have been more popular, but they were missing something on the marketing side this time.

Baymax (Scott Adsit) is a marshmallow-shaped robot, created by Tadashi (Daniel Henney), to help humanity. It is there for medical help and will not leave until the subject is safe. The robot was created at a lab where the top minds come together to advance science. Tadashi’s brother, Hiro (Ryan Potter), desperately wants in and creates this mind-controlled construction invention that gets the attention of everyone, but things go wrong quickly.

An explosion at the science convention ends in tragedy. Tadashi is killed and it changes Hiro forever. He is depressed and detached, but Baymax awakens and it is soon discovered that Hiro’s invention was not destroyed in the explosion. Some man in a kabuki mask is using it for evil causes. The villain is very cool looking and the way that he uses Hiro’s invention is a great visual.

After an encounter with the kabuki-masked villain, Hiro upgrades Baymax to duke it out with him, but he is still overmatched. Hiro opts to create a super team consisting of all of the young inventors that knew Tadashi and that’s when this film really kicks into high gear. Baymax, despite being a fighting machine, still has the helpful innocence and friendly voice and it’s very amusing. Almost everything he does is amusing and the team of newly-founded superheroes is a great mix of distinct characters with distinct abilities.

I suspect that BIG HERO 6 will become a bigger success in the home market. It reminded a great deal of THE INCREDIBLES and it’s as good or better. It falls under the entire FAMILY FRIENDLY category very well, having a way to connect to children but to also bring entertainment to the parents, although I do consider this more of a “guy movie”.

BIG HERO 6 is a great movie. If you need a break from FROZEN (as most parents do), this movie is perfect. It plays out just like a superhero movie and I’m guessing it would have been amazing live action. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
