In 1980, horror history was made. FRIDAY THE 13TH kicked off a decade of slashers and a franchise that stands to this day as one of the most influential and popular in the history of the genre. What made this film so different was the fact that the killer was an older woman, seeking revenge for the death of her mentally challenged son. Betsy Palmer took the role and would forever be written into horror history. Her delivery was amazing and the scene when she says “Jason was my son,” is still played with regularity whenever horror is covered.
Betsy Palmer passed away at the age of 88 from reported natural causes. Her film career spanned from 1951 to 2007 and greeted many of her fans in recent years at the many horror conventions that she attended. Scared Stiff sends its condolences to the family and friends of Palmer and are happy to have been able to witness her great contribution to the horror genre.
