Attack the Block (2011) – Aliens Attack

Maybe it was the really good advertising that had me pumped to see this movie.  The dialogue in the trailer seemed witty and entertaining.  It looked like a horror comedy that could deliver.  Nick Frost was in it and I’m a huge fan of his.  With all that in mind, I purchased it for the hubby without even watching it.

Well, first it’s not a comedy.  There are a few comedic elements, but overall it’s a straight-up horror film that is slightly below mediocre.

All but one of the protagonists are teenage gang-banging douches.  The other, Sam (Jodie Whitaker) is a woman in her early thirties who starts off by being robbed by the gang and then joins them as they run away from aliens.

Moses (John Boyega) heads up the criminals.  One night they come across an alien.  Moses decides he’s going to go after it.  He does and kills it.  Well, that’s the baby.  The other aliens get pissed and take over the block murdering anyone in their way but mostly stay on the trail of the gang.

Well, the protagonists evolve into caring citizens and Moses especially makes a large transformation into a better person by taking on the aliens himself.

Overall, the first 45 minutes of the movie is a very difficult and slow moving watch.  The characters are unlikable, the aliens are not visually appealing, and the dialogue is just lame.

The rest of the movie does pick up.  I always dislike when complete scumbags are made to be martyrs which does seem to be a trend nowadays.

It just is an overplayed emotional message that makes the claim that gangbangers are really good on the inside and more than that they could be heroes.

Scared Stiff Rating 4/10
