There have been a lot of horror movies that concern technology and the dangers that it may pose. In the Bobby Boerman thriller “APP”, we have what may be the best film on the topic. APP is relentless and interesting with a great cast and thrilling pace right to the end.

Anna (Hannah Hoekstra) in going to college and attends a party when she runs into an old boyfriend. Her best friend Sophia (Isis Cabolet) is free-spirited and tries to bring that out of Anna. When the old boyfriend, Tim (Robert De Hoog), shows up in her life again, Anna encourages her to rekindle the old flame, but the love is gone and Anna returns to her life. That’s when things get strange.

When Anna wakes up the next morning, a new app appears on her phone by the name of “Iris.” It’s a program that features an animated female face that will answer all of your questions, but it begins causing trouble. It can connect to anything and if things are not done to its demands, there will be hell to be paid. When Anna’s college professor gives her problems, Iris makes him pay, but the dark nature of the program starts to take over and people begin dying all over the place and the mystery grows.

Anna tries to get rid of the program. She trades her cell phone in and when she exits the shop, it blows up and the new cell phone she just got now has the app. She cannot hide from it and to make matters worse, it starts threatening her brother who is in the hospital. Anna has to figure it out or she is not going to be able to live a happy life.

The mystery thickens and it leads to the great reveal and the reasoning behind Iris and the creator. The ending may have been the only part of the film that could have been better. The payoff at the very end wasn’t as satisfying as the rest of the film was, but it wasn’t horrible. Hannah Hoekstra was perfect in the role of Anna. She was a tough chick and played it very well. Her performance was amazing in this.

APP is an amazing movie. It reminds me of FINAL DESTINATION in a lot of ways, but it’s a better film. APP is intense, memorable, and I highly recommend it.
