Another Kind (2013) – Horror Movie Review

In 1999, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT captured the imaginations of the public. It was in the infancy of the internet and it created a buzz for a horror film that was not seen before or since. Despite it coming out late in the nineties, it, along with SCREAM, defined that decade for horror. After its release, many THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT-inspired productions were released. It still inspires many filmmakers. It showed the power of marketing and word of mouth advertising. Filmmakers want to tap into the magic that made that film so memorable and in the 2013 film “ANOTHER KIND” we still see the influence of the found footage historic film. We actually see a very heavy influence.

Nate (Nate Miller), Laura (Laura Ramadie) and Patrick (Patrick Woodall), have planned a hike in the woods in the winter time. Why somebody would want to hike through the snow and camp in the winter is beyond me, but these three did. Much like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, the three main characters are using their real first names.

As they travel through the wilderness, everything seems normal…until the first night that they make camp. Strange lights illuminate the tent and when the group gets out and start looking for the cause, they disappear. Something strange is going on. As the nights go on, the activity persists and leaves Patrick in a near coma. That leaves Nate and Laura to drag him through the woods in hopes to find the way back home. Again, like the BWP, the group loses the map and goes in a complete circle but cannot explain how they did that. They also believe that there are other hikers out there that may be screwing with them.

Laura is next to come face to face with the cause of this madness and soon it’s Nate attempting to survive. He runs and keeps running. Suddenly, his cell phone starts pinging and all the messages that he’s missed are coming up, revealing the shocking reason why all these weird things have happened. I have to admit. I really did like the ending.

ANOTHER KIND can be seen as a tribute film or a knockoff of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. It is not found footage, but it is as similar as a movie can be. The story is nearly identical, the situations and conclusions are the same, and it travels the same roads over and over again. This film will not get points for originality, but it does get points for a very attractive production, good performances, and a good ending. If you like BWP, you will appreciate this tribute (or knockoff). I recommend it.

Rating: 5.5/10 – I think I’ll watch THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT now.

Dogman (2012) – Horror Movie Review

By Geno McGahee I love movies about monsters in the woods. I am partial to Sasquatch, but I won’t complain if they mix it up a little. So when I saw the cover art for DOGMAN, I was excited. Right on the cover we see what looks to be a […]
