I love cult movies. Love them. If there are evil people in robes chanting, I am there. It’s difficult to go wrong when you put people in robes unless it’s your grandmother in a bathrobe and her junk is hanging out all over the place.
In 1981, ALISON’S BIRTHDAY was released. It concerns Alison (Joanne Samuel). She is playing that dreaded Ouija board with her friends when a voice from the beyond speaks to her. That voice is her dead father bringing a warning that on her 19th birthday some bad shit was going to happen to her. A bookcase falls on one of her friends immediately and kills her. It’s a great start to this movie. It immediately sets the tone.
Alison is now turning 19 and she is going to spend some time with her aunt and uncle, but they have plans for her. They first have to contend with the meddlesome boyfriend of Alison, Pete (Lou Brown). He knows that they are doing something sinister and wants to rescue her but they are too smart for him and soon, he is running for his life.
The aunt, uncle, and many more are part of an evil cult that are trying to bring the soul of an ancient spirit from a 103-year-old hag to the 19-year-old Alison and the ceremony must take place. Pete crashes the party, but this is a horror movie and do you think that it would end on a positive note? Of course not. Pete does the rescue, but it’s too late, leading to a great ending of a great film.
ALISON’S BIRTHDAY is a great and atmospheric horror movie with some high tension. I highly recommend this movie. It was a great flick.
